Two arrested, one cautioned in 'fake software' swoop

Two Lincolnshire men were detained by police yesterday over accusations they were selling counterfeit software online.

The pair, who have not been named, were believed to have been selling fake computer software discs, including copies of products from tech giants Microsoft and Adobe.

The arrests were the second in a week by detectives from City of London Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) which also removed items from a Manchester property on Monday in relation to an illegal sports streaming website.

A spokeswoman for PIPCU told The Drum that one of the men admitted the offence and was cautioned, and a decision was made to take no further action against the other.

The raid came against a background of increased scrutiny of intellectual property theft with the new head of PIPCU, detective chief inspector Danny Medleycott telling The Drum this morning that the force intends to begin “throttling the chain” of  criminals involved in these illegal activities.
